懷素大師，十歲即萌生出家為僧的念頭，二十歲時禮拜玄奘大師為師，隨玄奘大師翻譯經典。二十二歲時，隨道成律師受具足戒，後專攻律部，鑽研諸家律學之後，發現多有不足與訛誤，立志另撰新疏。

懷素大師對於前人的著作能捨短取長，所以他的新疏一出，轟動一時，世稱「東塔宗」，與法礪律師之相部宗、道宣律師之南山宗鼎足而立，並稱律學三大宗。
